Autumn in every sense is harvest season. Outdoor festivals, this year’s crops, and vibrant fall foliage. To fully enjoy the stunning colors, consider reviving the classic family tradition of a scenic drive. Here are some of the region’s favorite routes to experience the season’s bounty.
Where to Start
If you’re new to “hunting” for fall colors, you’re in luck! Nevada County boasts a stunning display of fall foliage that doesn’t last weeks but months! However, because nature’s timing can vary, it’s helpful to know when and where the leaves will change. Start with our fall color guide for spots to enjoy the vibrant fall scenery and resources on where the leaves are “blooming.”
Olympic Valley Scenic Drive to Palisades Resort
If you’re heading into the high country for your chloro-fill of colors, take Highway 89 south from Truckee toward Olympic Valley. Get a glimpse of the beautiful mountain resort, Palisades Tahoe, before it’s covered in feet upon feet of snow, and fuel your stoke for the winter season to come. Along the valley you’ll see plenty of willows and aspens showcasing their vibrant fall hues. Stay Awhile
Warm sunny days and cool crisp nights make it also the ideal time to visit Truckee for your fill of outdoor revelry. In fact, it’s one of the best times of year to go fly fishing. It’s when the elusive brown trout becomes particularly aggressive (i.e. more likely to take your bait). If you need more coaxing, check out this list of the best fall activities in Truckee.
Highway 20 Nevada City to I-80
On our list of scenic drives, Highway 20 heading east from Nevada City is one of the most picturesque of the season’s fall tours. As you ascend, the landscape bursts into vibrant colors. Crimson dogwoods and bright yellow big-leaf maples contrast against a backdrop of tall evergreen pines. Bear Valley is particularly stunning, as the grasses, willows, and cottonwoods transform into a golden display.
Sample the Season in Other Ways
The scenic drives might be the reason to visit, but all the fun things in store for you are the frosting on top of the pumpkin spiced cupcake. Savor the season’s flavors by attending the Grass Valley Brew Fest at the end of September. Or explore the many other events happening throughout September and October. Bite into local history literally with a pasty as part of a Foodie Tour. And unleash your inner photographer by visiting one of Kial James’ favorite spots for capturing the vibrant fall scenery. With perfect weather, four state parks, and an almost infinite amount of activities to do, you might want to extend your trip a few more days.
