Nevada County Fair

Year in and year out, Nevada County’s Fair has been voted by the readers of the Union Newspaper as the best local event. It’s even been voted as one of the 10 Best in Rural America by the LA Times. Why?
Take In The ‘Scene’
For starters, it’s been hosted in what is referred to as “California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds.” Expansive green lawns. Hundreds of tall pines to find shade under. A small-town sense of historic community. It’s no wonder that this venue hosts events more than 200 days a year!
Bring Your Appetite
When the area that serves up food has its own name AND it’s “Treat Street”, you know you are in for a literal treat. Various non-profit organizations cook up some of the most delicious eats imaginable to present a culinary smorgasbord. For example, in 2017 the Rough and Ready’s Volunteer Fire Department baked potato booth served up FOUR tons of baked potatoes.
Fun For All Ages
This isn’t your everyday run-of-the mill County Fair. It’s a true testament of the pride and passion of Nevada County’s community by all the experiences. Kids will enjoy things like baby pigs, giant yard games, and even panning for gold in a magical forest. Adults can see actual artisans weave and do woodturning. Families can cheer on competitive carriage driving. The list of things to do in August during these five days are too numerous to count.

Back in 1895, when it was first started it was held to raise money for miners’ widows and orphans – as well as injured and out-of-work miners. Today it’s a chance to relive the glory days when Empire Mine ranked as one of North America’s largest, oldest and most prosperous hard-rock gold mines. In recent years, the park has welcomed over 1,500 visitors. Some come for the chance to picnic on the magnificent grounds, while others come for the live music. Many come to experience what life in a gold mine was like all those years ago and so much more. For further information, either phone the Visitors Center (530) 273-8522 or visit Empire Mine State Historic Park’s website.
