Nevada City doesn’t really need an excuse to celebrate. But when there is a reason, lookout because it’s going to be legendary. From the magical holiday charm of Victorian Christmas to the fun, lesser-known street fairs like Hot Summer Nights, there’s always something happening. And this February, the spotlight is on the Nevada City Mardi Gras Festival, bringing music, color, and plenty of revelry to kick off the year in style.

Nevada City’s Mardi Gras began in 1996 when locals, inspired by Mobile, Alabama’s Joe Cain Day, brought the festive spirit to their small gold-mining town. What started as a casual pub crawl grew into a full parade with groups like the Merry Widows adding flair. Over time, it evolved into a uniquely Nevada City celebration. Now it’s the largest Mardi Gras-style festival on the West Coast.

Keeping with the spirit of Mobile’s tradition, Nevada City celebrates Mardi Gras on the weekend before Fat Tuesday. This timing allows for a full weekend of festivities, including a parade and street fair in the historic downtown.

The celebration begins with the Mardi Gras Street Fair on North Pine Street from 12 pm to 4 pm. This is where visitors can shop local artisans, connect with area nonprofits, and enjoy food and drinks. The parade kicks off at 2 pm on Broad Street, featuring more than 25 festive entries, with past favorites including the Huldufolk Icelandic Elves and the Merry Widows.
