During the hot days of summer, many visitors head to the South Yuba River to cool off, but this can become dangerous quickly especially in the early and mid-season. Instead of risking your safety, why not try something different: kayaking on an Alpine Lake! You’ll get some exercise, enjoy the great outdoors, and even have a chance to take a refreshing dip. Even if you don’t own a kayak, they’re affordable to rent, and some of the lakes listed below have outfitters on-site.

Donner Lake

Like its bigger sibling Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake offers stunning high alpine scenery, but without the ocean-like weather challenges that Tahoe’s size can create. For those who want to experience the beauty of the area from the water, consider visiting Donner Lake to the west. This smaller lake features sparkling blue water and 7.5 miles of shoreline, with generally lower winds, making it ideal for kayakers of all skill levels. At an elevation of 3,100 feet, Scotts Flat Lake’s waters are open year-round, excluding jet skiing and waterskiing. With ample camping facilities, the lake’s glassy waters are perfect for kayaking. Standup Paddleboarding Magazine even ranked it as one of the 10 best spots in California. Local outfitter Mountain Recreation offers a variety of SUP and kayak rentals, as well as lessons for beginners. For the best experience, we recommend heading out in the early morning when there’s less boat traffic.

Note: For summer 2024, be aware that Scotts Flat Lake water levels will drop significantly below average. For more information, see Damaged PG&E infrastructure impacts NID water supply – Nevada Irrigation District

Englebright Lake

For the adventuring soul

Of all the lakes mentioned, Englebright is best suited for experienced kayakers looking for something different. Tucked in the Yuba River Gorge, as soon as you leave the southern end of the lake, you’ll find miles of secluded coves and shoreline to explore. Combine that with over 100 camping sites accessible only by boat, it offers a unique paddling excursion. If you’re visiting in the summer, we suggest arriving early or, better yet, exploring the waters on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
