1. Visit A Dog Park

Dog parks are a great way to help your dog exercise and socialize—and it’s a fun way for you to meet other dog owners, too! In Grass Valley, you’ll find Condon Park, which features an off-leash dog park called Dogs Run Free. If you’re planning to visit the Bridgeport Covered Bridge, consider stopping by the Western Gateway Dog Park in Penn Valley. Up in the High Sierra, Truckee River Regional Park offers winding walking paths, open play areas, and a dedicated off-leash dog park where your pup can run free.

Pup Manners

Visiting a dog park gives your dog the chance to interact and play with others, while you can socialize with fellow dog owners. To make the experience enjoyable for everyone, here are a few dog park etiquette tips:

  • Ensure your dog’s licenses are up to date.
  • Keep an eye on your dog’s behavior around other dogs.
  • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are current.
  • Always clean up after your pup.
  • Don’t bring your dog if they’re aggressive or don’t get along with strangers.

Remember, you know your dog best. If your pup seems uncomfortable, it’s okay to leave the park early. If your dog is anxious, you might want to try calming them with CBD. This natural substance, available at many pet stores, has been shown to help reduce anxiety, making the dog park experience more enjoyable for your pup.

2. Go for a Quick Dip

On hot days, taking your pup for a walk could put them at risk of heatstroke or burned paws. Just like us, dogs love a refreshing swim to cool off on warm summer days. Many of the reservoirs near Truckee, like Prosser and Boca, offer miles of shoreline, giving you plenty of space to play fetch with your dog. If you’re planning to visit South Yuba River State Park for the afternoon, you’ll be happy to know that dogs are welcome on all trails and shoreline areas—except for Family Beach. This area starts at the covered bridge in Bridgeport and extends 200 feet downstream on both sides of the river.

3. Go Camping

Camping is a fantastic way for you and your dog to connect with nature and take a break from the fast pace of everyday life. Being outdoors, surrounded by new sights, smells, and sounds, will refresh your pup’s senses. Whether you prefer a simple, back-to-basics experience or the comforts of glamping, Nevada City’s award-winning Inn Town Campground has something for everyone. If you’re into RVs or love Van Life, the Grass Valley RV Resort offers plenty of amenities, including a dog park with two sections and an outdoor pet wash station that your pup will surely enjoy.

One activity that should be at the top of your list when visiting Nevada County is taking you and your pup on a hike! It’s a great way to explore new surroundings and leave you both feeling refreshed and recharged. Start with an easy stroll that offers a big reward by heading out on the Deer Creek Tribute Trail, one of Nevada County’s best year-round trails. Along the way, you’ll learn about the region’s history, culminating in a beautiful suspension bridge.

If you’re in the eastern part of the county, check out these seven dog-friendly hikes perfect for any season. For a bit more of a challenge, locals love the Sawtooth Trail in Truckee, which offers stunning views of the Truckee River and surrounding peaks.

5. Check Out Local Events

Some dogs are just as much party animals as we are! The charming towns nestled in the pine forests of the Sierra Nevada know how to celebrate, hosting incredible community street fairs throughout the year—many of which are dog-friendly. In Nevada City, events like Mardi Gras in February and Earth Fest in April welcome your four-legged family members. During the summer, Grass Valley hosts Thursday night markets where your pup is also welcome. In Truckee, the biggest summer event, Truckee Thursdays, is a dog-friendly celebration too.

While most events are dog-friendly, it’s always a good idea to check with the local chambers before bringing your pup.

6. Just Relax

If you have a busy weekday schedule, sometimes all you need is a little quality time with your pet. A leisurely stroll through the historic neighborhoods of Grass Valley and Nevada City might be just what you both need. On hot days, unwind with your pup at Treats, where your dog can enjoy peanut butter ice cream while you indulge in their wide selection of flavors. If a brew or glass of wine sounds more appealing, many local breweries and wineries are dog-friendly, so you can relax with your furry friend by your side.

So, try one or more of these six dog-friendly activities to enjoy with your dog in Nevada County for a day or vacation that neither one of you will ever forget.
