While the Holidays are a festive time, they can be stressful as well. It’s the perfect time to let go of your daily routine and create some lifelong memories with your family by taking a short break to Nevada County. Our cozy towns take the holiday season seriously. We’re rolling out the sleigh bells, caroling, and mistletoe unlike anywhere else in the Golden State. If you want to get into the holiday spirit, Nevada County is arguably one of the best places to visit in California in December. And here’s how to enjoy it.

Cornish Christmas

November 29th – December 20th

Starting on Friday, November 29th and every subsequent Friday, downtown Grass Valley recaptures the spirit of Christmas past that would impress even Tiny Tim. Giving a nod to the original miners who settled here in the late 19th century, all the vendors will dress in Cornish attire. Stroll the downtown streets and enjoy chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Purchase homemade gifts and take in all the sights and sounds of an old-fashioned Christmas.

Festive Fridays

First Three Fridays in December

In the spirit of European holiday traditions, Truckee’s community has created Festive Fridays for the month of December leading up to Christmas. On the first three Fridays, businesses in the historic downtown district stay open later (until 7 p.m.), many offering refreshments. Additionally, there will be a “Snowflake Hunt,” where shoppers can find hidden snowflakes in participating stores for a chance to win prizes. It’s the perfect opportunity to soak in the holiday atmosphere, enjoy a leisurely shopping experience, and beat the hustle and bustle of the season.

Holiday Block Party

December 12th

A local favorite, this event offers both residents and visitors a chance to celebrate and connect with local farmers and makers in a fun, festive setting. Hop between the Tahoe Food Hub, Sierra Community House, and Truckee Roundhouse while enjoying live music, food, and drinks. You can also shop for organic produce, specialty foods, and handmade crafts from local artisans.

Have you ever wanted to go mushroom picking but didn’t know where to start? Then don’t miss the 27th Annual Fungus Foray and Mushroom Exposition! Over two exciting days, the event kicks off on Saturday morning with a wild mushroom hunt, followed by an afternoon of displayed finds and an identification workshop. On Sunday, the Wild Mushroom Exposition takes center stage, featuring presentations, interactive displays, and workshops focused on our seasonal Sierra mushrooms. You’ll also find wild-crafted food concessions, mushroom-themed merchandise for sale, and lectures and workshops celebrating the fascinating world of fungi.

PLEASE NOTE: If you want to join in on the hunt, online pre-registration is required to attend the event. Register online.

Victorian Christmas

December 8th – December 22nd

The first question to pop into your head may be, “Why a Victorian Christmas?” Fun Fact! Victorians were the ones who transformed the Christmas celebration into a family one. This included decorations, gift giving, and even entertainment. On two Wednesdays and three Sundays in December, Nevada City’s historic district transports back to that era. Christmas melodies and costumed characters remind visitors of another time and place. There are holiday activities for all ages including live entertainment, yuletide treats and libations, and of course Father Christmas!

How To Park

As you would expect, the Victorian Christmas in Nevada City is popular and street parking is EXTREMELY limited. Your best bet is to park at the Nevada County Government Center (950 Maidu Avenue) and take the shuttle.

Pro tip: Drop your group off at the event, park your car, and catch the shuttle. They only charge for the ride to the event. Everyone can ride back for free. $6 shuttle fee is CASH only.

Menorah Lighting at Robinson Plaza

December 26th

Now in its 9th year, the Chabad of Grass Valley is kicking off the second night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, with the lighting of the county’s largest menorah. In addition to the menorah lighting, enjoy traditional Jewish treats like donuts and latkes, along with music, dancing, greetings from local officials, and much more. The event is free and open to all, with security on site.

Mountain Getaway

For those that need to get away from it all and breathe in some fresh mountain air, Visit Truckee-Tahoe is the perfect destination. Go ice skating at the Truckee Ice Rink and sit by a toasty bonfire afterwards. Schuss down the slopes at Tahoe Donner, Palisades Tahoe, Donner Ski Ranch and Sugar Bowl resorts. Inspire and educate your kids about how to maintain the beauty of such a pristine lake and its surroundings by going to the annual Tahoe Film Festival.

From a quiet mountain getaway to unique festive holiday events, these make Nevada County one of the best places to visit in California in December.
