Attention all foodies, farmers, gardeners, and fans of sustainability! On February 7 – 9, 2020, Sierra Harvest’s Sustainable Food & Farm Conference takes place in Grass Valley, CA. The 10th annual event will feature one of the world’s most dynamic and provocative thinkers on agriculture and ecology, Dr. Vandana Shiva, to inspire more local solutions for personal and ecological health. The Sustainable Food & Farm Conference, first developed in 2010 by local farmers, is designed to support farmers, ranchers, homesteaders, and gardeners to adopt innovative, sustainable practices that promote nutrient dense food and a healthier environment.
The ninth annual Nevada City Chinese Lunar New Year Festival and Parade welcomes the Year of the Rat, 4718, on Sunday, February 9, 2020, on Commercial Street and at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Chinese New Year festivals are unique in rural communities, and Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra, along with the Miners Foundry, are proud to present this family-friendly celebration, honoring the early Chinese Gold Rush pioneers and railroad workers of the Sierra. The mini-community parade begins on Commercial Street at 12:00 noon, near the giant Pelton wheel, at the intersections of Commercial, Coyote, and Union streets, and ends at the Miners Foundry, for an afternoon of entertainment, food, and fun! Admission at the Foundry is free, and donations are gladly accepted.
Nevada City’s annual Mardi Gras Parade and Celebration is set for Sunday, February 16, 2020. The annual event, hosted by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, features a festive parade and Street Fair throughout historic downtown Nevada City, offering up California Gold Rush scenics and spirited fun. Nevada City, California, has been known to throw a party or two and its version of Fat Tuesday is no exception. People come just for this colorful annual event that lights up the streets with bright costumes, beads and a sense of playfulness that pervades both the Street Fair and Parade. With the Street Fair on N. Pine & Commercial Streets open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., you can find the last accessories for your perfect costume, shop hand-made gifts or pick up some extra beads for friends. Mardi Gras shirts, masks and the things that make Fat Tuesday fun will be available for sale, along with vendors selling food, drinks, crafts and more.
