Blithe Spirit

Blithe Spirit-Remaining performances cancelled

Message from Sierra Stages:

It is with regret and disappointment that we are announcing cancellation of all remaining performances (March 13, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 21) of our production of Blithe Spirit at the Nevada Theatre. The cancellation is based upon the guidance relating to public gatherings issued by the State of California on March 11, 2020 and our concern about the health and safety of our audiences, cast, production staff and ushers.

Sierra Stages is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Our mission is to enrich the cultural life of Nevada County by providing high quality, affordable and accessible performances for everyone. We have tried to fulfill this mission over the past 11 years and intend to continue to produce live theater in our community for local actors, local production staff and local audiences.

Blithe Spirit was our 40th staged production and represents hundreds of hours of effort, as well as infinite talent and energy, on the part of our cast, director, designers, technicians, and staff.  Producing Blithe Spirit also required significant expenditures — for royalties; the set, lighting and costumes; the theatre, rehearsal space and shop rent; and marketing — which we will not be able to recover because we were able to hold only half of our scheduled 12 performances.

If you have purchased single tickets to one of the remaining performances of Blithe Spirit, you may:
•  Donate your ticket(s), and receive a tax deduction for the total ticket value.
•  Receive a refund for the value of the ticket(s).

If you are a season pass holder and have tickets for one of the remaining performances of Blithe Spirit or have not yet booked tickets for Blithe Spirit, you may:
•  Donate your ticket(s), and receive a tax deduction for the total ticket value ($27/ticket).
•  Receive a refund of $27/ticket.

Because we are a non-profit organization and have incurred significant expenses to produce Blithe Spirit, we hope you will consider donating your ticket(s) and receive a tax deduction. If you are a ticket holder, please click on the button below to let us know what your choice will be.

Thank you for your support of Sierra Stages.

The Sierra Stages 2020 season opens with the classic Noël Coward comedy “Blithe Spirit”, playing four weekends only from February 28 – March 21 at the historic Nevada Theatre, located in the Northern California town of Nevada City.

In “Blithe Spirit,” the novelist Charles Condomine is working on his latest book “The Unseen.” As part of his research, Charles and his wife Ruth invite the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance at their country house. The evening takes a supernatural turn when Madame Arcati conjures Charles’ deceased first wife, Elvira, from the afterlife. Elvira decides to haunt Charles and do her best to disrupt his second marriage to Ruth. Love and marriage quickly devolve into laughter and mayhem, as doors bang, vases fly, and invectives abound in this witty, spirited comedy.

Written in 1941, “Blithe Spirit” was an immediate, huge hit in both London and New York. The play has remained wildly popular in the seven decades since, with thousands of professional and amateur productions all over the world. In 1945, David Lean directed a film version starring Rex Harrison as Charles. More recently, the play was successfully revived on Broadway in 2009, with a Tony Award-winning performance by Angela Lansbury as Madame Arcati, a role she
repeated on tour to Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2015.

Performances of “Blithe Spirit” are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2 PM (There is also one Thursday evening performance on March 19 at 7:30 PM). All seating is reserved. For the first performance on February 28, tickets are $20 for all seats. Thereafter, ticket prices are $30 (rows A-H) and $25 (rows J-O). Tickets may be purchased with no additional charge online at www.SierraStages.org and over the phone by calling Sierra Stages at 530.346.3210.
