Dark Skies Event at Malakoff Diggins State Park

The Friends of North Bloomfield & Malakoff Diggins will host a dark skies event at Malakoff Diggins State Park on Saturday, August 10th, 2019, beginning at 8:30 pm. The park association’s August event will be a Star Gazing Tour of the Night Sky to honor the 50th Anniversary of the 1979 moon landing.

Our a special guest speaker will be Al Stahler, host of KVMR’s radio show “Soundings” along with a few of his guests from Nevada County Astronomer’s club. The star tour will be held in the Lake City Meadow, near the south entrance to the park in the historic town site of Lake City.  There are no city lights visible in the area and the site allows a nearly 360 degree view of the night sky where a thee quarter moon, the rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s moons, and the beginnings of the Perseid Meteor shower should be visible.

The gate to the meadow is about 200 yards northwest of the intersection of Lake City Road and North Bloomfield Road, the first driveway on Lake City Road, west of the intersection with North Bloomfield Road. Volunteers at the address driveway will direct parking, starting at 8:00 pm. The event begins at 8:30 pm and will conclude at 10:30 pm.
