Nevada City Pro/Am Cycling Classic is gearing up for its 59th consecutive year—the second oldest continuously running bicycle race in the country. Sunday, June 2, 2019 will see the streets of Nevada City come to life with racers, spectators, runners and plenty of local color for this long-standing tradition.
June 1 sees the addition of Nevada City’s Brewfest, held at the foot of Commercial Street In the parking lot outside of Three Forks Brewery. While many remember this race’s long connection with Father’s Day, choosing another date allows for room to grow and include other events, like Brewfest and a Gravel Ride hosted by Rotary as a benefit for Big Brothers and Big Sister of Nevada County on June 1.
In 1997, the race was designated a USAC National Classic Pro Points Series Race, and thirteen years later, in 2010, its course became the starting point of Stage 1 of the AMGEN Tour of California. With total prizes of over $8000, the historic race frequently draws top talent from both the West and East Coasts. The Women’s and Junior divisions are very competitive with entrants including some of the best future Jr. riders as well as many world-class Women’s competitors.
While the focus of the event is the competitive ride, there are plenty of family-friendly events, like the Kids Bike Parade and the 3rd Annual Nevada City Mile, which is an all ages running race that takes place on the same route as the bike race on Sunday, June 2 between bicycle race categories. Top short-distance track and road runners attend from around the West Coast.
