December is here, and that means it’s almost time for Christmas, and no one does the holiday better than Nevada County! In fact, you could spend an entire weekend completely immersed in holiday-themed fun!
Tonight, Grass Valley Downtown Association once again hosts Cornish Christmas, a weekly celebration taking place from 6-9 p.m. every Friday through December 23, highlighting the traditions and costumes of the area’s Cornish heritage while celebrating the magic of Christmas. Revelers are invited to stroll down the quaint streets of downtown Grass Valley, enjoying entertainment, vendors dressed in period attire, and a host of holiday themed activities.
Christmas in the Pines will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3th, at the Lake Center near Lake of the Pines at the corner of Combie and Magnolia Rd.. Santa will arrive at 10:30 a.m. on a fire engine – bring your cameras and come visit Santa for memories that last a lifetime! 25 craft, food, local business and nonprofit booths will decorate Lake Center and will offer fun games and prizes. Don’t miss this wonderful South County tradition!
Victorian Christmas returns to Nevada City beginning Sunday, December 4th, as cheerful and kaleidoscopic as any holiday festival or street market since 19th century London. Minstrels, jugglers, magicians, cloggers, accordionists, highland dancers, barber shop singers, a choir, a brass band, and a Walking Christmas Tree will be among the many surprises, attractions, and curiosities at this year’s five events on Sundays and Wednesdays. Rumors abound of the return this year of the sensational Beyond Fire Tribe dancers, providing an extra flair of Victorian showmanship as they perform an 1800-esque side show of their own creation. This delightful celebration takes place twice per week until Christmas; every Sunday from 1:30-6 p.m. and the two Wednesdays preceding the holiday from 5-9 p.m.

Or, take a drive up to the 10th Annual North San Juan Holiday Craft Fair, taking place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. December 3-4 at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center. Shoppers will have a chance to experience the works of talented craftspeople, shop for some gifts, and savor soups and hot drinks at this annual craft event set within the one-room schoolhouse on the San Juan Ridge. Visitors from afar will have the chance to enjoy a scenic drive leaving behind the relative hustle and bustle of town to do some holiday shopping in this classic, natural setting. When you need a break from all the shopping, you can enjoy a hot bowl of soup and a cup of tea in the Craft Faire Café. Baked goods by some of the wonderful San Juan Ridge bakers will also be available.
If you love trains, don’t miss Christmas at the Railroad Museum taking place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. this Saturday, December 3, at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum. This Christmas Party draws hundreds of children to the brightly decorated museum for an opportunity to visit Santa Claus and receive a gift. The event is filled with family fun and refreshments. Door prizes are awarded every hour plus a raffle and silent auction. Last year more than 1,000 people dropped by to see Santa. It’a great day for the whole family.
If you love to sing, or just enjoy holiday tunes, join Music in the Mountains at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, at the Amaral Center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds for their Soiree Cabaret Holiday Sing-Along, an intimate evening of favorites for the season. This event features the community’s most delightful artists leading holiday sing-alongs with plenty of surprises!
