The blooming of spring has us thinking about summer. Have you visited the little town of Washington? First settled in 1849, Washington was a high point on the South Yuba River where gold was discovered. By 1880, miners in Washington had recovered over $10,500,000 in gold. Today, the town’s population hovers around 180. It swells during the summer months with visitors who come for the swimming, hiking, and camping.

The Buttermilk Bend Trail might get all the attention but the South Yuba River State Park is filled with trails that allow you to get up close and personal with the bloom. For example, the 2.7 mile Point Defiance loop. It provides a bit more challenge with elevation gains, but rewards you with lovely views. ⠀

For an easier trail, the half-mile Cemetery loop trail goes through the historic area and along the river providing a different viewpoint along with wildflower sightings.⠀

Spring wildflowers might be the stars of the show and rightly so... but there`s another "bloom" that`s missed by many this time of year - mosses, lichens and fungi.
