Explore Truckee

Truckee’s rich historic roots are rivaled only by the town’s expansive outdoor opportunities. Nestled in the majestic Sierra Nevada range, this charming western ski town gives access to a myriad of recreational and extreme activities.

Named the best outdoor town for skiing and snowboarding by Outside Magazine (August 2006), Truckee has produced a number of winter Olympians and proven itself as a winter wonderland as well as a mecca for summer fun. Trails beckon hikers and mountain bikers and serve up expansive vistas and hidden lakes. Kayakers and river rafters take to the rustling waters of the Truckee River and golfers can tee off at the Old Greenwood or any number of scenic mountain courses.

Dining and Wine

Food, wine and art also have a strong presence in the Sierra hamlet. Mark Estee, founder of Moody’s Bistro & Lounge has appeared twice at the James Beard House, though he’s better known for serving Sir Paul McCartney who gave an unforgettable impromptu performance to some lucky Truckee diners. Cottonwood Restaurant & Bar, one of the nation’s oldest ski lodges, overlooks downtown Truckee and was the site of America’s first mechanized ski lift. Wine bars offering flights of wine and eclectic collections enhance an unpretentious culinary landscape.

After a day replete with nature and nourishment, guests can relax at any number of bed and breakfasts, cozy vacation homes, and full-service hotels, including the eco-chic, European-inspired Cedar House Sport Hotel. Or the Hampton Inn & Suites Tahoe-Truckee Hotel, a premium Northern California hotel, delivers an outstanding lodging experience with the right mix of modern amenities, vintage hospitality and unique value.

Events and festivals punctuate Truckee’s laid back, lust-for-life lifestyle. Visitors can sample some of Truckee’s finer offerings at the Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop in October while Truckee Thursdays, which run June through August, feature live music, art, children’s activities, beer garden, and food and wine tastings. September’s Trails & Vistas brings art, dance, music, and nature together in a unique outdoor art experience.
