1. Baby Goat Experience

Join Outlandish Adventures this Saturday, May 11, on this authentic guided farm experience. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with milking the goats. You will meet the milking does in the parlor and have an opportunity to try hand-milking a dairy goat. Your host will explain the procedures and the processes that contribute to healthy goats and healthy milk.  You then move on to feeding the goats. This includes bottle feeding the kids as well as feeding the adults and moving them to their pastures.  Your host will give you a hands-on tour of a small working dairy goat farm, and answer all your questions. You will have ample time to hang out with the goats, cuddle the littlest kids, romp in the pastures with the older kids and tour a small goat-milk lotion and soap production facility.

2. Mother’s Day at Cosmic Roots Ranch

Cosmic Roots Ranch is holding a Mother’s Day sale at their farm this weekend, May 11-12, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.  Come play with the baby pigs.  Let the kids cuddle the baby chicks while mom peruses the vast selection of plant starts (only $1) and handmade soaps and candles.  Pick up some pork, which they proudly proclaim as “the most loved meat you’ll ever eat” to barbecue to give mom the night off from cooking.

3. Springtime at Empire Mine

On Saturday, May 11, Empire Mine State Park will be hosting a special event to enjoy the beauty and history of the historic landmark. Previously a Mother’s Day event, the staff decided to host this newly expanded day in the garden the day before so that families could attend but also be able to make mom’s day unique in their own way.  “It’s a day that focuses on women,” Randar explained. “Complimentary cups of tea will be served in the special Tea Garden, and that’s become a popular addition over the last few years. Of course, our Living History docents will be dressed in their beautiful, turn-of-the-century attire – a bit reminiscent of Downton Abbey, as they recreate our golden past.”

4. Railroad Sesquicentennial Celebration

The Transcontinental Railroad was completed on May 10, 1869 and connected the country’s eastern and western states through the rail system. This year marks the sesquicentennial or 150th anniversary since that day and to celebrate the historic milestone, Truckee Public Arts Commission (TPAC) will dedicate its spring art showcase to works inspired by all-things-railroad. Friday’s reception will feature railroad songs by local Truckee artist Richard Blair.  Come celebrate all things railroad at the Truckee Community Rec Center.
