Enjoy a taste of Western Nevada County from 1-4 p.m. this Saturday, March 4, in Downtown Grass Valley. The Foothills Celebration, now in its 16th year, is jointly hosted by the Grass Valley Downtown Association and Sierra Vintners and showcases some of the finest Northern California wines, local gourmet cuisine, and confectioners delights.
Event goers are invited to stroll, sip, sample, and shop their way through Downtown Grass Valley, with over 20 locations featuring food, wine, and good times. Tickets include unlimited wine tasting, with over 30 varietals being poured, and five food tickets to allow you to sample local cuisine paired with the wine being offered at each location.
The Foothills Celebration is just the therapy you’ll need for a late winter weekend. Everyone is in good spirits and just glad to get out of the house. The great thing about this event is that rain or shine, it’s just as good. The wineries and restaurants are all paired with local downtown Grass Valley merchants who open their stores for this unique wine and food tasting affair.
Over the last several years, Nevada County has really come into its own as a Mecca for small wineries, with 48 different varietals planted locally and 18 wineries producing over 40,000 cases of wine annually.
More than just wine tasting, the Foothills Celebration offers gourmet bites that you do not want to miss. At 151 Union Square, have a gazpacho and shrimp shooter while tasting wines from Sierra Knolls and Fawnridge. Smith will be pouring at Maria’s Mexican Restaurant, with a pairing of delicious carnitas street tacos. Dave the Wine guy will be offering wines at Foothills Flowers with down home pulled pork sliders from Smiley Guys. The Olive Groove will be pouring wines from their own Vian Estates and doing an olive oil tasting. Tess’ Kitchen Store will be pouring wines from their in-store wine collection hand selected by sommelier Dawn Empson with delicious gourmet bites from their own celebrated chef Alan Tangren.
Head over to Tofanelli’s for a smorgasbord of culinary delights including mini crab cakes with mild red pepper aioli, crispy cheese ravioli with house made marinara, Cesar salad with fresh parmesan and croutons, grilled garlic bread, and some of their award winning seafood gazpacho topped with shrimp. Naggiar will be pouring wine there, and this is one location you absolutely do not want to miss!
Head over to Mill Street Clothing for dessert, which will feature brownies and gluten-free cookies from Nana’s Artisan Bakery paired with wines from Sierra Sky and Bonitata. “This is really a great way for people to get a taste of what Downtown Grass Valley has to offer,” said Lisa Swarthout, GVDA Chairman and owner of Mill Street Clothing.
In between tastes and bites, make sure to enjoy some shopping therapy as you stroll the streets. Choose from a variety of clothing boutiques, home stores, gift shops, jewelry stores, and more.
Many venues will also feature live music from some of our area’s most talented musicians.
Foothill Celebration begins at the Gold Miners Inn/Holiday Inn Express, where you’ll pick up your food tickets and tasting glasses. From there, it’s a treasure hunt for magnificent foods, wines, music, art, shopping and fun throughout downtown Grass Valley!
