It’s Mardi Gras time, and even though the official date isn’t until Tuesday, February 28, Nevada City starts celebrating early!
The 25th anniversary of Nevada City’s annual Mardi Gras Celebration is set to happen this Sunday, February 19. The annual event, hosted by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, features a colorful & festive parade & street faire throughout the streets of historic downtown Nevada City.
The Street Faire on N. Pine & Commercial Streets will be open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Beads, masks and Mardi Gras shirts will be available for sale, along with a wide array of vendors selling food, drinks, crafts & more!
Spectators will crowd the streets to enjoy the floats & revelers at the 25th annual Mardi Gras Parade, 2 p.m. on Broad Street, Nevada City. Everyone is encouraged to attend in festive Mardi Gras attire.
This is a family event for all ages. Please, NO GLASS CONTAINERS. Bring your lawn chairs to watch the parade/reserve your space. Give yourself plenty of plenty of time to park your vehicle & to walk, as streets will be closed around the parade route and town will be busy. This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.
After the parade, head over to McGees for a FREE Mardi Gras after party from 2-6 p.m. featuring The Dyin’ Breed. The band members have all been playing together for 12 years and you can feel the good vibes and family ties they have to each other while playing. Expect a high energy blend of outlaw country and rock & roll to keep you dancing!
Then, the following weekend, the Miners Foundry Cultural Center will be hosting a Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball from 8-11:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25. Grab your dancing shoes and a Mardi Gras masque and rock the night away! Deadbeats will headline the evening with special guest, Sgt Funky. The evening will feature a no host full bar and cajun food available for purchase. Costumes and masks are encouraged! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the music starts at 8:00 p.m. This is a standing / dancing show with limited seating available. Tickets are $25. Ticketing fees may apply. Tickets are available online, by phone, or in person at the Miners Foundry, or at Briar Patch Co-Op.
To get ready for all of these Mardi Gras events, head to Solstice in downtown Nevada City, a vintage consignment store and costume shop that has all of your masquerade needs covered.
You don’t have to travel to New Orleans to enjoy Fat Tuesday, just head to Nevada City!
