Truckee Community Christmas underway

Truckee Community Christmas has received an outpouring of support from passionate businesses, organizations and individuals who have joined the umbrella organization’s efforts to coordinate drives that provide assistance to local needy families over the holidays. For readers who feel inspired to participate, there is still time! Below are updates on the various drives happening around Truckee:

Food: Food collection barrels are out in Safeway, Save Mart and other locations. Suggested food item lists are posted at the collection barrels. Readers interested in helping with sorting and packing of boxes in the next week, call Lynn Richardson at 530-582-2422. We are currently in short supply of canned goods.

Toys: The Truckee Donner Soroptimists International is spear-heading the toy drive, in conjunction with the Marine Corps, Coldwell Banker and Toys for Tots. New unwrapped toys can be placed in collection bins at banks, real estate offices, schools and businesses all over town. Wrapping paper is also needed this year.

Toy wrapping: Volunteers are needed to help sort and wrap toys on Thurs., Dec. 15 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Sierra Mountain Community Education Center on Donner Pass Rd. Call Alissa Just at Mountain Home Center, 530-587-6681, extension 11 to sign up.

Coats: Drop off clean winter outerwear to the following locations:
Church of the Mountains: 10079 Church St.
Sierra Bible Church: 11460 Brockway Rd.
Dickson Realty: 11500 Donner Pass Rd.
CoffeeBar, 10120 Jibboom St.

The Senior Holiday Wish program: Area homebound seniors are being taken care of by the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation’s Queen of Hearts. An additional effort for local low income seniors has wrapped up.

Monetary contributions: For those who prefer to help by writing a check, contributions can be mailed to Truckee Community Christmas, P.O. Box 2955, Truckee, Calif. 96160. Monies contributed will be primarily used to purchase food gift cards. All donations are tax deductible.
